NICE’s aim and reasoning
The guidance says: “There is a high unmet need for effective self-management support for asthma control. Improving asthma control can reduce exacerbations and enhance quality of life.” And we could not agree more! Self-management has always been core to our solution and we are thrilled that the impact is recognised by the renowned institute that is NICE.
With guidance on early use of self-management technologies, NICE allows for the following potental benefits while further evidence on impact in the UK system is gathered:
• Patient benefit: Support people to follow their personalised asthma action plan (PAAP) and help them adhere to this plan to improve asthma management.
• Clinical benefit: Improve asthma control to help reduce exacerbations and improve quality of life.
• System and resource benefit: Improve asthma control and reduce care need, including hospitalisations and emergency department visits.
• Equality of access: Offer an alternative format to written PAAPs.
What does this mean?
This Early Value Assessment (EVA) and recommendation for early use from NICE means that core NHS funding can be used on approved technologies whilst they continue to generate evidence during a three-year period.
It means AsthmaTuner can be used in NHS in parallel with further evidence creation of our technology, including in the UK. We plan to go live in Q3 2026, so stay tuned – this is just the first step!
