New Asthma Diagnostic Study to be Unveiled at ERS 2024 in Vienna

We at MediTuner are excited to share the news of a groundbreaking study that will be presented at the prestigious European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress in Vienna 2024. The study, led by Björn Nordlund, Associate Lecturer and Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, examines the diagnostic accuracy of AsthmaTuner in asthma diagnosis. This is a highly relevant area, particularly given the increasing demand for accessible and user-friendly solutions for chronic diseases like asthma.

ERS 2024 Vienna

If you are in Vienna, you are warmly welcome to listen to Björn Nordlund’s presentation of the study results, which takes place on Tuesday, September 10th, from 12:30 to 14:00. It is a great honor for us to contribute to this international platform, where some of the most prominent researchers and experts in pulmonary medicine gather to share the latest research findings.

Method and Results

A total of 146 patients participated in the study, undergoing an asthma evaluation in accordance with the Swedish Medical Products Agency’s updated guidelines: “Normal spirometry does not exclude asthma as the degree of airway obstruction in asthma varies over time.”

The tests included:

– Spirometry with bronchodilation test: A crucial test to measure lung function and identify any bronchial obstruction.

– Asthma diary: Patients documented their symptoms and measured values for PEF (Peak Expiratory Flow) and FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second) daily for 14 days.

This method provides a detailed picture of the patient’s lung function over time and can reveal the variability that is crucial for an accurate asthma diagnosis, especially when the patient is exposed to triggers such as physical exertion or allergies

Thorough Asthma Evaluation is Crucial

The ability to conduct spirometry and a digital PEF diary at home offers significant benefits for both patients and healthcare providers. It reduces the need for frequent clinic visits, increases patient involvement in their own care, and could potentially lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of asthma. Careful monitoring of asthma is crucial – it should no longer be acceptable to prescribe asthma medication without proper diagnostics and evaluation of symptom control.

We eagerly look forward to presenting these results in Vienna and continuing our efforts to improve asthma care globally. Want to know more? Keep an eye on our blog – we will publish more information as soon as the study is officially published!

Thank You to the Healthcare Staff

Finally, we would like to extend a big thank you to the fantastic healthcare staff who have included patients in the study and made this research possible despite the big time challenges within healthcare.
